To Plot or To Pant – That is the Question

Indeed it is. For any writer out there, I think we all ask the same question. Do we plot out the whole story, or do we fly by the seat of our pants? We all seem to arrive at our own way of doing things.

I’ve read all sorts of craft books, and many of them tell you, in detail, how to plot your book. I’ve gone to workshops about it. I’ve tried, but it just doesn’t seem to work for me. I’ll have everything neatly plotted, start to write, and everything changes. Once I get to know my characters, they take hold of the story and steer it in the direction they want it to go, although I try, with grim determination, to hold onto some of my ideas.

So I guess that makes me a pantser.

I’m always fascinated by how other writers work. Do you plot or pant?
